Editorial Newsletter

Dear Readers,

A new year, a new release procedure and a new major release! Three exciting topics for this editorial.

OK, let’s just take the first in the list for granted – it is, after all, mid-February – and so I’ll dispense with the belated best wishes for the new year.

Following in our grand old tradition, we usually use the first newsletter of the year to present the release dates for the current year.

One key change to our release procedure is the amendment of the customary release cycle, which usually covers minor function or bug-fix versions (e.g. from 3.12.1.x to 3.12.2.x). We are decreasing the frequency of these releases from eight to 12 weeks. Discussions with customers and suggestions made at the last LAGO User Group convention showed that an eight-week cycle is much too short for most of our users. Accordingly, many of you were skipping versions, meaning that crucial bug-fixes were not being used.

On the other side, we have to admit that our efforts to improve quality have not yet had the desired effect, and we have failed to reach all of the quality targets we set ourselves. We will continue to stick forcefully to the path we have set out on and will be stringently examining every aspect of our software creation process (from initial design to implementation right through to delivery). In this context the adaptation of the release cycle is only one of many measures we will be taking to bring us closer to our goal.

The implementation of the measures and their assessment will take place in stages over the next 6-9 months, and we are confident that the improvement in quality will be quantifiable and tangible both for us and our customers.

Of course, as always, production-critical topics will be addressed and rectified at short notice by our software development team.

Please also remember that tickets will be assessed and prioritized by the comosoft customer helpdesk.

The releases in 2010 will be as  follows:

  • 8.2.2010
  • 3.5.2010
  • 26.7.2010
  • 18.10.2010

And now, finally, to the third and last topic: We are poised to introduce LAGO 4, the first comprehensive relaunch of the LAGO Suite in eight years. Over the coming months we’ll be updating you about this exciting development through our website, with a range of events we have lined up and, of course, through our newsletter. There’s a lot to look forward to!

I hope you enjoy reading this issue of the comosoft Newsletter!

Handling of Automat jobs based on priority
The LAGO Automat has been enhanced to optimise the handling of jobs based upon priority to ensure that jobs with the highest priority are always handled first but that jobs with lower priority will also be processed.  This is done by doubling the priority value of the unprocessed jobs each time the list of open jobs is read by the Automat.
Availability: LAGO 3.12.2

Editing of Logo variants in LAGO Explorer
As of the current release of Lago 3.12 it is now possible to edit the names and categories of Logo variants directly in LAGO Explorer.  In addition to this it is now also possible to assign a separate category to logos which will be used by the XML Export for Internet.
Availability: LAGO 3.12.2

Restart failed import Job
The latest version of the LAGO Transfer server allows for failed jobs to be restarted directly within the Transferserver interface.  This makes it easier to restart the failed import once the reason for the failure is corrected.

Media Hierarchy

The new media hierarchy function in the LAGO media lighttable facilitates the organisation of media assets by allowing the creation of a structure of folders to which individual media assets can be assigned.

This function is controlled by two central configuration entries and a user right.

The first central configuration entry determines if the hierarchy will be shown or not, the second if it is possible to edit the hierarchy interactively.

The user right (Edit media hierarchy) allows you to control which users are allowed to edit the hierarchy and assign media to the various positions.

Once activated the function will be visible in the light table of all applications and the display of the media hierarchy can be turned on and off as the user requires.

A user with the appropriate user right can work within the light table to create a media hierarchy by clicking with the right mouse button on an existing folder within the hierarchy and then selecting from the options presented to create a new folder as a subfolder from the selected folder, edit the selected folder name or delete the selected folder.

Assigning media to a folder within the hierarchy is as simple as drag and drop.  You first perform a search in the light table for the desired image(s) and then drag and drop them onto the appropriate folder in the hierarchy to assign them.

Right-clicking on a media in the hierarchy allows you to remove the media from its folder within the hierarchy.

Layout Editor Enhancement

With the help of the Layout Editor it is possible to design the pages for your advertising medium outside of QuarkXPress or InDesign. The integrated Layout Editor in LAGO Explorer comes with a range of new functions in LAGO 3.12.

In addition to improvements in the handling of this tool, there are a number of new features which enhance the capabilities of the tool considerably.  Grids allow for the placement of products (Elements) on the advertising medium page with the help of predefined positions.  In general, you can refer to them as landing sites for the planned products.

Being able to differentiate between used and unused grid positions over multiple variants was until now not possible.  From now on LAGO Explorer displays the grid layout with an additional symbol.

Grid is used in no variant

Grid is used in several variants

Grid is used in all variants

The Grid is used in one variant with more than one Element

When editing an advertising medium page in the layout editor it is possible to switch between all catalog variants where this page exists.  Within the list of variants a new symbol will be shown next to each available variant showing whether or not a page layout is assigned and also if all the grid positions are planned or not.  This overview allows the user to quickly see if products have been planned in all available variants.

No page layout assigned

No grid is used

Some grids are used

All grids are used

Within the display of the grid itself it is now possible to display additional information from the articles, elements, etc. that are planned.  This is defined via an entry in the central configuration under ”LAGO / Prelayout / RasterFieldInfoText“.  It is even possible to include linebreaks by using \n .

Example: $(ArtFld1)\n$(OrderNum)\n($(Layout))

A very comfortable new feature of the layout editor allows the users to move and scale the individual grid postions within the page.  This means in detail that until now the grid positions have always and a fixed size and position relative the page layout.  To allow extra flexibility in the planning stage it is now possible to freely change the position and size of the grid positions. The position and size of the placed promotional information (components) within the page is adjusted accordingly when the grid position is modified.  How the different component types behave can be set centrally.

Änderungen zurücknehmen und Wiederherstellen

Resetting or reapplying changes made within the layout editor is managable via Undo and Restore functions.  Changes made within the laoyut editor are saved via the dedicated Save button.

This feature is activated via the central configuration LAGO / Prelayout / SupportUndo = y.

In the settings for LAGO Explorer you can determine whether or not a confirmation dialog will be displayed when saving data in the layout editor.  It is also possible to define whether the thumbnails or the image previews should be used for the image display and also to acitvate or deactivate additional warning dialogs.
